Believe it or not, there is mounting evidence that playing video games might actually be good for you. According to Psychology Today, video games improve “ logical, literary, executive, and even social skills,” and they have long-lasting positive effects “on basic mental processes–such as perception, attention, memory, and decision-making.”
Well, as a parent I still feel the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to video games, but this is not what this article is about. I actually enjoy playing video games, but decided years ago not to buy a game console.
And the simple reason is this, owning a game console is not congruent with my goals. Video games are a lot of fun, very engaging, take a long time to master, and are highly addictive. Basically, they require a lot of time, and that’s the one thing I don’t have any spare of these days.
I believe that a person’s actions and behaviours must be consistent with their goals and ambitions. If you have big goals, that require a lot of time and effort to achieve, don’t allow your self to get distracted.
It never ceases to surprise me when I see people complain about something or other, while at the same time having habits and behaviours that just exacerbate the situation. A young entrepreneur has big goals, yet spends more time on checking their social media than actually working. A person desperately wants to lose weight, but does nothing to change their diet and lifestyle to make it happen. You get my point.
So this article is not about video games at all, it’s about the need for you to be clear about what you want out of your life, and then developing laser-focus to make your dreams and ambitions come true. For me – a person who has multiple businesses and a foundation to run – there is no room for game consoles. I play the odd app game on my iPad or iPhone for entertainment, and that’s good enough for now.
Now stop reading this and go do something about those big dreams of yours.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and talk soon.
