Does The Law of Attraction Really Work?

The Way to Heaven

The answer of course to this question depends on who you ask. A skeptic will tell you it’s all a load of baloney, while a believer will tell you that it works beyond the shadow of a doubt.

I would definitely put myself in the second category, and I’m quick to add that the field of metaphysics has gotten increasing attention from scientists in the last 30 years. Moreover, there are many scientific studies that seem to validate the law of attraction. The best possible book you can read on the subject is The Field, by Lynne McTaggart. See the video review I did of the book here.

Not so straight forward:

I think The Law of Attraction is misunderstood, and often falsely presented. Yes you can attract things, but you have to actually do a lot of work towards achieving your goal. Also, not everything you want to attract will manifest itself.

Some law of attraction proponents say that everything that happens to you has been attracted. Even natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis are attracted, they say. I don’t quite believe this.

In my opinion, our lives are made of a series events, some of them positive, some negative, and some neutral. We have to go through some pretty negative and painful experiences to fully appreciate the good.

Our lives consist of waves of positive and negative experiences, and the law of attraction helps us attract more positive ones, and limit the negative ones. However, you cannot eliminate the negative ones completely. What I’m trying to say is that you can directly influence your life, but not fully control every aspect. You can attract a lot of what you want, but not everything. Does that make sense?

I think that anyone can achieve their goals and dreams, but don’t think for a moment that it will be a straight line. Success is always a zig-zag line. There will be many trials and tribulations, and you’ll often feel like giving up, but there’ll also be many miraculous moments that keep you going. Opportunities will often come at the most unexpected times, from the most unexpected places.

How to use the law of attraction; six steps

1) Awareness:

You’ve got to first realise that you are not where you want to be. Awareness also means realising that you can make a difference, and that you – no one else – control your own destiny. You must realise that you are not a victim of your circumstances, but are a living consequence of your thoughts, decisions and actions.

2) Decision:

After awareness comes the solid decision that you will achieve your goals. As Master Yoda from Star Wars says “Do. Or Do not. There is no try.”

3) Write your goals down:

Something magical happens when you write down your goals. It helps the manifestation process, and takes you that one step closer to attracting the things you want. I’ve got a mind map of the things I want to achieve and/or attract for the next 30 years. I update it regularly.

Another powerful tool is a vision board. Basically this is a pin board you have in your home or office where you attach photos of all the things you want. Have a dream car? Put it up there. What about your dream home? Stick it up there too, and so on.

4) Visualise and emotionalise:

After you’ve written down your goals, or put them up on a vision board (or hopefully both), now imagine yourself having achieved the thing you want. Make sure you add the emotions as well. Say you want to attract a dream car, how do you feel once you have it? Happy, proud, thrilled, rewarded? Use these emotions when you visualise driving that car.

Make sure you add gratitude as well. You might feel like you have nothing to be grateful for right now, but you should still show gratitude. Be grateful for what you have now (no matter how bad you think it is), and show gratitude for what you’re attracting as well. Don’t be skimpy on the gratitude. The Arabic word Alhamdulilah is a lot more powerful than people realise.

5) Take action:

Here’s the important bit that many people miss, you still have to do something to attract your goals. Benjamin Franklin said “God helps those who helps themselves.”

Look, the law of attraction works in vibrations. If your vibrations are in tune with what you want, then you’ll attract the things you want. The correct vibrations will be sent out once you do all the steps above, but they will be emphasised and multiplied through action. If the universe senses that you’re working hard to achieve something, it conspires to help you! That’s what people mean when they say that someone creates his or her own luck. You start living an amazing synchronistic life!

6) Detach:

Once you’ve done all the above, you need to detach. The universe does not like needy people! Just let go. You can revisit your goals anything from daily to weekly to monthly, but during the interval just completely let go and don’t even think about the things you’re trying to attract. Detach.

No victim mentality:

Remember what I said about vibrations? Well, if you have a victim mentality – “oh poor me!” type thinking – you’ll only attract more of what’s making you miserable, because these are the vibrations you’re sending out! Know someone who’s stuck in a cycle of continuous bad luck? Well they’re attracting it!

Don’t get me wrong, there are many victims out there. Some people are the victims of some really horrible acts. I’m not suggesting for a moment that they don’t deserve sympathy or help. Of course they do. But a victim should, as much as possible, avoid a victim mentality. They have an obligation to help themselves, and if they want to use the law of attraction, must avoid thinking like a victim. You get what you think about the most, it’s that simple.

Do you always get what you are trying to attract?

As mentioned at the start of this article, no you do not. I believe that some things are just not meant to be, but you’ll inevitably get something better than what you wanted. Trust in God Almighty, he knows best. Everything – everything – happens for a reason, otherwise it would not have happened. Make sense?

Two great books on the subject of the law of attraction are the classic Think and Grow Rich  by Napoleon Hill, and Dr. Joe Vitale’s The Attractor Factor. You’ll also find a ton of website dedicating to teaching you how to use the law of attraction.
