Here’s a wonderful testimonial from Elham Al-Faris regarding her Son, Sultan Abdulkarim. Sultan used something he learnt in Zen-Do to stop a bully. The thing is he didn’t even have to get physical! Read her letter to find out more:
My son Sultan has always been a gentle soul. He never fights with anyone. That is a great quality but sometimes being too good can be bad for one. Now I’m not saying that I want him to be a monster, but I have always wanted my son to be able to defend himself, in any situation, to the best of his abilities. And so from an early age, I have put him in different types of martial and self-defence arts.
Last year, I enrolled him in Zen-Do. Even though I live all the way on the other side of the island, in Galali, I make sure that Sultan gets to his class and doesn’t miss any, because he loves it so much. I think that Zen-Do is a great way to learn a martial art, but it has slightly improved Sultan’s defense as well. Just the other day, he told me that some child was trying to bother him and he “used his voice”. He raised his voice and used it as a weapon. By shouting things like “stay away”, he managed to get rid of this bully. This is a skill that he learned at Zen-Do.
From a young age, I was affected by a lot of people, and that gave me knowledge of life. Sultan has had a very protected environment, so I feel he needs to learn these things even more. I still want my son to be able to defend himself more, but even a little thing like keeping someone away verbally is some progress.
Sultan loves Zen-Do so much that he tells me, “Mama, you can stop all my activities except Zen-Do”.
As a parent, I think there is opportunity at Zen-Do for more awareness for the safety of children, and it could be done more. The good thing is that I can give this kind of feedback, because all the staff at Zen-Do and the instructors are very open to suggestions. The teachers are well qualified, and are excellent in dealing with parents and children. They always make me feel welcome. And I feel like I can tell them anything, positive or negative. That kind of communication is extremely important to me, for the quality of education my child receives.
I am very happy with my decision to bring my son to Zen-Do, and I hope in future he learns more skills, and more awareness, to be able to defend himself in any situation. Inshallah he reaches all the way to his black belt.
Thanks Um Sultan for sharing this story. And yes, we’ll do more awareness training. For those interested in finding out how Zen-Do can help your child visit www.zendoforkids.com.
