The Bravest People of 2009… And the Unexpected Adventure!

Yesterday I did something very unusual.

I set out a challenge to all Zen-Do students.  It was also a kind of experiment, to see who would be brave enough… who would be strong enough.

I announced a 6:00 am class on New Year’s day!  We’re usually closed for new year, but this year I did just one class at 6:00 am!  I wasn’t sure if anyone would show up, but sure enough a few brave souls did!

The first to be there was (Sensei) Ali Sroor.  To be honest, I didn’t think he would show up.  In fact, I bet someone else BD 20 that he wouldn’t!  (FYI, I did not force any Zen-Do Team Members to come, I told them it was completely voluntary).

I was there at exactly 5:45 am.  This was followed a few minutes later by Zen-Do Brown Belt Youth student Karim Al-Komiashi, then Alaa Al-Alawi, Hussain Al-Fardan and Vinod Joseph.  And just when we were about to start Maha Al-Mansour also showed up.  Overall, seven of us.  Seven brave souls who had the audacity to come to a kickboxing class at 6:00 am on New Year’s Day!  I’ve decided to make this an annual tradition 🙂

Here are one or two videos of the class.

The Story does not end here!

After the workout, someone suggested we have breakfast at Costa Coffee in Country Mall.  So we went!  We had a great breakfast there.  We had a nice time and some nice conversations.  Maha and Hussain then left (they both had work!  Can you believe it?).

Ali then asked “guys, what should we next?  How about horse riding?”  I thought he was joking.  I told him that I was ready to go home and back to bed.  But it turns out he wasn’t joking at all.  Vinod and Alaa seemed up to it.  So I thought, what the heck, yalla! So we went to the this horse riding place in Barbar and went out for about 45 minutes!

It was so much fun!  A completely unexpected adventure.  We rode around Budaya.  Ali, Alaa and myself have various levels of riding experience.  But it was Vinod’s very first time, and he did great!  We had such a blast!

Well, when we were done, we were exhausted – and quite sore.  Now I was ready to go home.  Then again Ali asked “guys what’s next?  Shall we go to a movie?”

We all agreed!  And went to the Seef Mall, wearing Zen-Do uniforms and smelling like horses 🙂  We saw Righteous Kill with Robert Di Nero and Al Pacino.  A good movie by the way.

By this time it was 12:30 pm.  Now I was really tired.  Of course the question came up “guys, what should we do next?  How about lunch?”.  Well, that’s where I had to stop.  There was a family lunch planned for today so I had to leave.  Besides I missed my wife and kids.  So I finally came home, five and half hours later than originally planned!

It was such an unexpected New Year’s morning.  We had a lot of fun and I look forward to doing again next year!

Here are some photos, Happy New Year 🙂
